Westfield Township
Westfield is a town located in Union County, New Jersey. According to the 2010 United States Census, there were 30,316 residents, 10,566 households with a median household income of $127,799.
Westfield has a total area of 6.7 square miles. The town is bordered by Mountainside and Springfield to the north, Garwood, Cranford to the east, Clark to the south, and Scotch Plains to the west.
Westfield was settled in 1720. It was formed as a township in 1794 and officially incorporated in 1798. Westfield was then incorporated at a town in 1903. Westfield was Westfield Memorial Library founded in 1873 by a book club that would meet and swap books every Saturday. In 1874, a town-wide fire destroyed most of downtown. The town’s first fire department was formed shortly after in 1875.
In 2017, Westfield was mentioned and highly in the media. NJ.com ranked Westfield 13th in lowest violent crime. Wallethub.com ranked Westfield #19 as best cities in America. USA Today voted Westfield as the best destination for shopping. NBC Television show Ed was filmed in Westfield. The Rialto movie theater in downtown Westfield can be seen in the opening sequence.
Westfield Public Schools consists of ten schools, pre-kindergarten through twelfth grades, serviced 6,417 students during the 2014-2015 school year. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark also operates Holy Trinity Interparochial School.
Several wear memorials are located in Westfield dedicated to the Korean War, World War II and the Spanish American War. There is also a special Tribute to the resident who dies in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Westfield is known for its spacious parks. Gumbart Park is 8.3 acres with basketball court, little league fields and an ice rink. Houlihan/ Sid Fays Fields have 4 acres of synthetic turf. Memorial Park and Lenape Park are shared with neighboring towns. A few others are Brightwood Park, Clark Memorial Park, Mindowaskin Park, Tamaques Park, Sycamore Field and Windsor Park.
Various businesses are located in Westfield. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America Metropolis of New Jersey is headquartered in Westfield. Yestercades, an arcade dedicated to games of past and present, has a location in downtown Westfield. A few restaurants in Westfield are Farinolio, the Mulberry House and Westfield Station Café.
Many notable people have lived in Westfield. A few are Kevin Feige President of Marvel Studios and film producer; actor Andrew McCarthy; Robert Greifeld the CEO of MASDAQ-QMX; Charles Addams, creator of the Addams Family and Bryan Beller bass guitarist for Dweezil Zappa and Shawn Byron of the great 1990’s basketball pick up games in Milltown. Dave Brown, Billy Ard and Harold “Butch” Woolfolk, former NY Giants football players, have all lived in Westfield.
