Union Township

Union Township is located in Union County, New Jersey, not to be confused with Union Township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. In the 2010 census, there were approximately 56,600 residents and 19,556 households with a median household income of $73,722.

Union Township has a total of 9 square miles and is bordered by Hillside to the east; Elizabeth, Roselle Park and Kenilworth to the south; Springfield Township to the west; and Millburn, Maplewood and Irvington to the north.

In 1667, Union Township was settled by Puritans who fled Connecticut because of religious persecution. This settlement was called Connecticut Farms. Connecticut Farms was a shipbuilding community throughout the 17^th century. It was also the site of the Battle of Connecticut Farms during the Revolutionary War. In this battle, British ships from Staten Island landed in the Union Township area to invade Elizabeth. The Continental Army was able to hold the British forces back.

In 1772 William Livingston built his retirement home, Liberty Hall, on 120 acres in what is now known as Union Township. Livingston was a signer of the Constitution, a member of the First and Second Continental Congress, then served as a brigadier general in the New Jersey militia. Liberty Hall is located at Kean University.

An experiment of Thomas Edison was manifested in Union Township. Charles Ingersoll, a watch manufacturer, joined forces with the Lambie Concrete House Corporation and created an entire neighborhood of poured concrete homes. This was one of Edison’s many ideas. This was a cheap and effective way to provide affordable housing. Unfortunately, many architects found these homes aesthetically unpleasant. All of these homes today have been given new siding.

Union Public School District serves students throughout Union Township. In the 2011-2012 school year, the district had 7,466 students enrolled. Other schools in the are the Deron School, St. Michael’s Parish School and the Holy Spirit school. Kean University, a state university, has been located in Union Township since 1958.

There are a few attractions in the Union Township area. The Union Watersphere, largest water tower of its type in the world This water tower holds 250,000 of drinking water and is also used as a cell phone tower. Also, Tom Mahoney Military Park is a war memorial dedicated to the servicemen and women of Union Township. Tom Mahoney was a survivor of the attacks on Pearl Harbor and served in the navy for 6 years and a member of the Union Township community. Huck Finn Diner, The Red Cadillac and Mark Twain Diner are local restaurants in the area.

There are many redevelopment projects in the works for Union Township. The old National envelope site, Tuscan Dairy site and the Red Devil site are all slated for new construction. These projects will provide new housing and warehouses to service Port Newark and hopefully bring jobs and new residents to the area.

Comedian, Artie Lange and Actor, Ray Liotta both grew up in Union Township. Elliott Maddox and Joe Collins, professional baseball players, are from Union Township. Darnell Stapleton and Larry Kubin, both played in the NFL and are also from Union Township.
