The township of Toms River, formerly known as Township of Dover, is the county seat for Ocean County, New Jersey. The Township of Toms River has a total area of 52.884 square miles, 12,396 square miles of this area is water. Toms River shares its northern border with Brick Township and Lakewood Township. It borders Jackson Township and Manchester Township to the west. Just south of Toms River is Berkeley Township, Island Heights and South Toms River. Lavallette, Seaside Heights and the Barnegat Bay are located to the east.
Toms River Regional School District consists of 18 schools and had an enrollment of 16,125 students in 2014-2015. This district also services the boroughs of Beachwood, Pine Beach and South Toms River. Monsignor Donovan High School, Ocean County’s only Catholic High School, is also located in Toms River. Ocean County College (OCC), a community college, has its main campus in Toms River. OCC is associated with Kean University. Bruce Springsteen briefly attended Ocean County Community College. Novins Planetarium, located on the OCC campus, features educational programs and fun laser shows.
Joshua Huddy Park, named after Captain Joshua Huddy of the Revolutionary War, is located in downtown Toms River. This is the location for farmer’s markets, local events and concerts. Cattus Island Park, located on the Barnegat Bay, is the home to the Cooper Environmental Center and is run by Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation. The center provides wildlife displays and educational programs to the public.
The film Amityville Horror and the television series Boardwalk Empire were both filmed in Toms River. MTV reality shows Jersey Shore and Made were also filmed here. Toms River is home to the 2nd largest Halloween parade in the World, the New Jersey Ice Cream festival and New Jersey Chili and Salsa Cook-Off.
