Both boroughs are located in Northern Ocean County and border Bay Head to the south and Brick Township to the west. The Point Pleasant area is situated on the Barnegat Peninsula and surrounded by water; the Manasquan river inlet is to the north and Metedeconk river is to the south. The Atlantic Ocean is located to the east.
This land was first used as a ceremonial meeting location for the Lenape Indians; it was referred to as “Land of Tall Timber”. In 1665 the first Europeans settlers came to the area. They were mostly fisherman, farmers and boat builders. In 1865 Captain John Arnold built the first bridge over the Manasquan River, connecting the Point Pleasant are to Monmouth County.
Borough of Point Pleasant Beach
Point Pleasant Beach was incorporated in 1886. The Borough of Point Pleasant is 1.744 square miles with 1.427 square miles of land. It was ranked the eighth-best beach in New Jersey in the 2008 Top 10 Beaches Contest sponsored by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium.
As of the 2010 census, there were 4,665 people living in the Borough of Point Pleasant Beach. The Point Pleasant Beach School District had an enrollment of 695 students in its two schools. Point Pleasant Beach High School also serves the students of Bay Head, Lavallette and Mantoloking.
The white sand beaches of Point Pleasant Beach are one mile long. The first boardwalk was built in 1890. This flimsy structure washed away within two years. The first permanent boardwalk was built in 1915 and was the location of many amusements. In 1920, Orlo Jenkinson built Jenkinson’s Pavilion and Swimming Pool. Jenkinson’s Pavilion was a music and dance venue when it was built and is a popular nightclub today.
Major attractions to the area are Jenkinson’s Boardwalk and Jenkinson’s Aquarium. Jack Baker’s Wharfside and Patio Bar, Martel’s Tiki Bar and Europa South are popular restaurants in Point Pleasant Beach.
Famous individuals who live or have lived in Point Pleasant Beach are Robert and Dean DeLeo from Stone Temple Pilots and basketball player, Matt Farrell.
Point Pleasant Borough
Point Pleasant Borough is much larger than Point Pleasant Beach, with a total area of 4.167 miles. As of the 2010 census, its population was 18,392 people with 7,273 households. The median household income was $78,521.
Point Pleasant Borough School District consists of four schools and had an enrollment of 2,966 students. Saint Peter School, founded in 1923, is a local Roman Catholic grammar school. It was one of ten schools in New Jersey that was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education.
The Vintage Automobile Museum of New Jersey and various parks are some local attractions. Beaver Dam County Park is located in Point Pleasant Borough. This park boasts six acres of playing fields, two playgrounds, tennis courts, a basketball park. There is also a boardwalk through the tidal wetlands. Riverfront Park is located on the Manasquan River and offers a boat launch and a pavilion to host special events.
This area has typical employment opportunities of any shore town. Many businesses are tourism based and in the service sector. You will find many small-town businesses like attorney offices, medical practices and realty agencies.
The Shore House, Local Urban Kitchen and Cookie Lady’s Café are a few restaurants located in Point Pleasant Borough.
Eugene O’Neill, famed playwright, lived in Point Pleasant with his wife Agnes Boulton in or about 1918. Their daughter Oona O’Neill married British actor, Charlie Chaplin. Diamond Dallas Page, former WWE wrestler, was born in Point Pleasant. Frankie Hayes, baseball player who holds the major league record of most consecutive games played by a catcher, retired in Point Pleasant.
