Bridgewater Township
Bridgewater Township is in Somerset County, New Jersey. It is 32.5 square miles. According to the 2010 census, there were 44,464 people living in Bridgewater Township with 16,111 households. The median household income was $108,680. Bridgewater Township is a suburban area with many of its residents commuting to New York City.
Bridgewater Township borders thirteen other municipalities. The Raritan River runs along Bridgewater Township’s southern border. The Watchung Mountains border Bridgewater Township to the north. Bridgewater Township was known to be a farming community. There was a population boom in the 1970s when residents of larger towns such as Plainfield and Newark started to migrate into Bridgewater Township. It is now Somerset County’s second-most populated municipality.
Land where Bridgewater Township currently sits was purchased from Lenape Indians. It was then chartered by King George II of England in 1749, incorporated in 1798. Bridgewater Township was one of New Jersey’s 104 original townships. Middlebrook Revolutionary War Encampment was a huge section of land incorporating much of what is now called Somerset County. The first official American flag was flown on June 14, 1777 in the Bridgewater part of the encampment. To commemorate the first hoisting of the flag, there is an annual changing of the flag on the 4th of July. Middlebrook encampment is now the site of the Middlebrook Trail system. 3.5 miles of trails including a boardwalk and 900-foot bridge. constructed mostly by volunteers of either boy of girl scouts.
Bridgewater Township has over 3,600 acres of land devoted to parks and recreation. There are eighteen (18) township parks, three (3) county parks and one county athletic complex. TD Bank Ballpark, home of the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball can be found in Bridgewater Township. A few scenes from the 1994 film North was filmed at Bridgewater Commons Mall. A few local restaurants are CAVA, 22 West Tap and Grill and Seasons 52.
Bridgewater Township is home to many national and international pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms, along with many other large employers. A few of these employers are Valeant, Allergen, Sanofi-Aventis, Johnson & Johnson, MetLife, and Phillips-Van Heusen.
Bridgewater Township is part of the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District. This district consists of 11 schools, 10 of which are located in Bridgewater Township. There were 8,691 students enrolled in the district as of the 2014-2015 school year. Bridgewater-Raritan High School was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School by the United Sates Department of Education for the 1999-2000 school year. The Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School is located in Bridgewater Township.
A few notable people who have lived in Bridgewater Township are Herman Carr, inventor and early pioneer of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); Scott Schwartz, former child actor who starred in The Toy and A Christmas Story; former Immaculata basketball and Hall of Famer Jack Cust and Eric Murdock former professional basketball player with the NBA.
