Lakewood Township

Lakewood Township is the most populous township in Ocean County with a population of 104,157 as of 2018. Lakewood is currently the fifth most populated municipality in New Jersey. Lakewood share its eastern border with Brick Township. Jackson Township is located to the west, and Toms River Township is just south of Lakewood. Howell Township is situated to the north.

The Lakewood School District consists of seven schools and had an enrollment of 6,208 students as of the 2014-2015 school year. An additional 18,000 students are enrolled in 74 yeshivas throughout Lakewood. Lakewood is home to one of the largest yeshivas in the world, Beth Medrash Govoha, with an enrollment of 6,500 post high school students.

Lakewood was once a fashionable winter resort town. Historical notables from likes of Theodore Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland and Mark Twain all vacationed in Lakewood. John D. Rockefeller, industrialist and philanthropist had an estate in Lakewood. This land was donated to Ocean County is now Ocean County Park. Georgian Court College is also located at the former estate of George Jay Gould, financier and railroad executive. It is a private Roman Catholic university.

There are many attractions in the Lakewood area. FirstEngery Park is the home of the Lakewood Blue Claws, the Single- A minor league baseball affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Strand Theater was built in 1922 by architect Thomas W. Lamb. The Strand hosted vaudeville shows and silent movies. Milton Berle, Ray Bolger and Burns and Allen are some of the acts that started their careers at the Strand.

Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, part of St. Barnabas Health Care system, is located in Lakewood and is one of the area’s largest employers. Church & Dwight Co, Inc., manufacturer of Arm & Hammer Brand Household Products and Astor Chocolate Company are also located in Lakewood. A few restaurants in the Lakewood area are The Chaflin House at Lakewood Country Club, La Dolce Vita Restaurant and The View at Eagle Ridge Golf Club.

Boxers “Gentleman Jim” Corbett, Max Baer, Buddy Baer, Max Schmeling and Joe Louis all trained in Lakewood. Steve Tisch, chairman of the New York Giants and film producer, actor Michael Cudlitz and football player Brandon Carte grew up in Lakewood. Mookie Wilson, baseball player for NY Mets currently resides in Lakewood Township, New Jersey.
